Burt Reynolds Trans Am Sold $172,000

Burt Reynolds Pontiac Firebird Trans Am

Burt Reynolds Trans Am Sells for $172,000 dollars, I just can’t even fathom my ’76 ever getting 10,000 but for a price of a small condo 20 years ago you can drive a piece of automotive history.

All Photos are from Bring a Trailer.com where the car was listed…

First and foremost if you watch the video you get to see an awesome car and see a cute chick. Sadly you are going to hear how awkward she is, she is no professional speaker I can assure you of that. She tries but I just could not do it. Whenever she spoke I turned the volume down.

Now this car was just sold by Ferrari’s Online its the 403 Oldsmobile Motor with 90,314 miles hey not to bad for a 1977 right. One of the Burt Reynolds Trans Am’s went for $500,000 back in 2016 at Barrett Jackson. Hey I love Burt but not for a half a mil I tell you what.

Now this car was was restored by Murphy Auto Body and Restoration of West Palm Beach, and registered to Burt Reynolds with Harold Murphy as the Leinholder. Harold is the owner of Murphy Auto Body and has restored many of Burt’s vehicles for over 30 years. And me living half my time in South Florida I have seen his work and its nothing short of amazing.

It has been told that there were some changes carried out during Burt’s time with the car, and the work is said to have included a repaint, interior refreshment, and the addition of “Bandit” lettering on the driver’s door. The hood and dashboard were signed by Burt Himself before the sale of the car in 2015. This Trans Am is now offered on dealer consignment in Costa Mesa, California with signed memorabilia, photo documentation of the hood and dashboard signatures, and a copy of the dealers invoice, with a clean Florida title in Burt’s name.

Now this car appears to be all stock with no modifications, hell the original exhaust system with that god awful catalytic converter. And as a kid of the 70s and 80s I will tell you that those converters were the first thing to go. Hell even my own ’76 Trans Am has true dual exhaust they kept most of the factory pipes but that converter is gone baby gone. And for this car to have that is a miracle in itself .

The interior is exactly what you would expect from a Y82 Car, Y82 is code for special edition. Whereas in 1976 when it was the first year of the Black and Gold combo they were the Pontiac 50th anniversary editions. Then from 1977 to 81 they were called Special Editions many Pontiac guys like myself just call them Y82s .

Just like the tightwads that get mad when you call the hood bird a screaming chicken or Fire chicken instead of Firebird. For the record, I call mine Fire Chicken, why? Because I can.

Sadly this car is the automatic three-speed that is virtually indestructible, but with this being the 185 Horse Olds motor you don’t have to worry about breaking it unless you do neutral drops in it all month a five thousand RPMs. But sadly I am a 4-speed guy myself and to me, every Trans Am should be a 4-speed stick.

The base Pontiac 400 in 1977 was 180 horse and the W72 High Performance 400 got 200 horsepower. Now I believe the 403 Olds motor was 185 horse but don’t quote me on that. Note on the shaker scoop on a regular base 400 an 403 the shaker read 6.6 Litre. On the W72 cars, it read T/A 6.6.

Now over the years that does not mean anything because many people put the T/A 6.6 on their shaker scoops because it looks cooler and I fully agree. But then again none of my Trans Am’s were ever stock so.

I am guessing this is either a high altitude car because of the 403 motor. California and high-altitude cars received the Olds 403 engine, which offered a slightly higher compression ratio and a more usable torque band than the Pontiac engines of 1977.

Now this car features T-Tops which everyone including myself love. But they leak like all hell if not taken care of. But to be honest many leaked from the factory. You gotta take the good with the bad in a way. My T/A does not have them I just do not want them in the future on another one maybe but I do not have to have them.

If you look in the video it does not appear to have a positraction rear but a limited-slip. Sorry, guys if I drop over 100,000 grand on a car I had better be able to roast both tires all the time.

In the End…

This car is the Icon of the 70s next to the General Lee remember The Dukes of Hazzard came out in 1979. Sure you had the red Trans Am in Hooper, or The Rockford files Esprit (actually Formulas that looked like Esprit’s see my other post).

An Burt Reynolds not only being a great actor, well in my own opinion anyway. When someone says they never liked him, I still go into shock then let it go. He walked into a role-playing a trucker from Georgia and turned it into Hollywood Gold. Took Pontiac sales off the charts and gave us mindless entertainment we can enjoy for years.

And he made little 9-year-old kids like me forget about my obsession with Americas Sports Car the Corvette. And Totally fall in love with a hood bird, shaker scoop and T-tops. While humming a Jerry Reed Country Song, in the middle of North East New Jersey. Where the only country we had was our backyards if we were lucky enough to have one.

Now if you excuse me I have to go to the store in my Black and Gold Trans Am with a 4 Speed.
